Additives
Definition
Additives are substances incorporated into a polymer to modify or enhance its properties. For example, additives can be used to improve processing performance or extend a material’s lifespan. They influence a wide range of characteristics, including mechanical strength, thermal stability, UV resistance, color and processability.
Additives are typically blended with base resins during compounding or introduced through masterbatch formulations. Common categories include stabilizers, fillers, colorants and flame retardants.
Context
Additives are used to tailor thermoplastic materials to meet specific performance and application requirements. Without them, many polymers would not meet the demands of real-world use.
For M. Holland, additives deliver customized material solutions. M. Holland’s supplier partnerships and compounding and formulation expertise help customers optimize materials for performance and manufacturability.
