Dual Specification

Definition

Dual specification is the practice of qualifying two or more materials or suppliers for use in the same application. Each approved option must meet the technical, regulatory and performance requirements of the end product so manufacturers can switch between materials without disrupting production.

Context

Dual specification is a supply chain risk management strategy that ensures production continuity when a single source material is unavailable. Qualifying multiple materials creates sourcing flexibility, allowing manufacturers to circumvent supply constraints and respond quickly to price volatility or regulatory changes.

M. Holland encourages dual specification to help customers build resilient supply chains. Through technical expertise and supplier partnerships, M. Holland supports customers as they evaluate alternative materials that maintain performance, compliance and product quality.
