Advanced Recycling

Definition

Advanced recycling, also called chemical recycling, refers to several different technologies that convert post-use and hard-to-recycle plastics that would otherwise end up in landfills into their original building blocks, specialty polymers or feedstocks for other valuable products, such as new plastics, fuels and waxes.

Context

Advanced recycling represents a major innovation in the circular economy of plastics, offering the potential to recover value from materials that are too contaminated or complex for mechanical recycling, such as mixed, multilayer or colored plastics.
